PRIVACY · WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR FILES

Privacy policy

Written in plain language, because a privacy page you need a lawyer to read isn't a privacy page.

The one-paragraph version

totxt.org converts images to text. There's no account system, so there's no profile, no password, no activity history. Files travel over an encrypted connection and are deleted from the server as soon as the task finishes. If you want even less to think about, the built-in mask tool lets you blur or cover sensitive parts before anything is uploaded.

What we collect

Very little, because the site doesn't need much:

  • The files you upload, and only for as long as it takes to extract the text. More on that below.
  • Basic server logs (IP address, browser type, approximate time) for the usual operational reasons — noticing when something breaks or when a scraper is hammering the server. These logs contain no file contents and are kept short.

We don't ask for your name, your email, or your phone number. There's no account, no newsletter signup, no "create a free profile so we can email you" step.

What happens to the files you upload

This is the part most people care about, so it gets its own section.

  • Encrypted transfer. Uploads and downloads use TLS. The connection is encrypted end to end.
  • Processing only. Files are used for exactly one thing: extracting the text you asked for.
  • Deleted when the task finishes. The file and every file derived from it — page images from a PDF, intermediate copies, anything — are removed from the server right when the conversion completes. There is no archive, no cache that hangs around, no backup pool of uploads.
  • Never reused. Uploads are not used to train models, improve the engine, or build datasets. The result text goes back to you and the source disappears.

The mask tool

Some people just like having the option to handle things themselves. Every file in the queue has a Mask button. It opens a small editor where you can paint over or blur any part of the image — a name, a card number, an address. Only the masked version is then uploaded. Nothing about the masked-out content is transmitted, because it's simply not in the file anymore.

Cookies and analytics

This site doesn't set tracking cookies, doesn't run advertising, and doesn't feed visitor data to third-party ad platforms. At most, the kind of functional cookies a server needs to remember a setting are used. If that ever changes, this page will be updated first.

Children

This is a general-purpose page that anyone may use, but we don't knowingly collect personal information from children, and we don't want it. Since there's no account system, there's nothing to sign up for anyway.

Where the answers live

Most of what people ask about this policy is answered with shorter words on the FAQ and the how it works page. The short version of everything here fits in one sentence: your file is used to get your text, then it stops existing on our side.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, this page changes with it, and the date below moves. Material changes — like suddenly keeping files longer — would be announced on the homepage too, because that's not the kind of thing you sneak into fine print.
